Chestnuts
Chestnuts and sweet chestnuts (Castanea sativa) are becoming increasingly important in professional cultivation – both as high-quality nuts for direct marketing and as landscape-defining trees with an ecological function.
Our tree nursery offers selected varieties and origins for commercial use: from grafted chestnuts for fruit yield to robust chestnut trees for municipalities and agroforestry projects.
The trees are heat-loving, long-lived, and, with proper care, bear aromatic fruits that are in high demand on the market – ideal for specialty marketing, gastronomy, or roasting.
- Improved varieties with large, tasty fruits
- Long-lived trees and shrubs with high site tolerance
- Ideal for agroforestry, direct marketing, and regional specialties
Location
- Chestnuts prefer warm wine-growing regions with annual rainfall of 600-800 mm
- Nutrient-rich, deep, well-aerated soils, no waterlogging
- pH values of 5-6.5 are ideal, no calcareous soils
- Planting distance: 10 x 10 m (100 trees/ha) in orchard cultivation, up to 200 trees/ha are planted in commercial cultivation
Pruning measures
- Winter pruning: major pruning should only be carried out in dry weather to prevent fungal infection.
- Summer pruning: between June and August; this significantly increases the amount of light, which is crucial for the formation of flower buds from September onwards.
- Fruit formation on 1-year-old wood, so take pruning measures into account.
Flowering/pollination
- Self-sterile
- Full yield when planting at least 2 varieties
- The flowering period extends from May to July, depending on the variety
- Pollination is less dependent on insects and more on the wind
